What is Yoga?

  • The word yoga means unity or oneness. Yoga is the ancient science of integrating and harmonising the body, mind and spirit by the expansion of awareness through yogic postures, breathing techniques, meditation and deep relaxation.

  • The integrated system of yoga practices we teach was developed by Swami Satyananda Saraswati at the Bihar School of Yoga in India.

Benefits of Yoga
  • Increased awareness of the inter-relationship between body, mind and spirit.
  • Encourages flexibility, strength and good posture.
  • Invigorates the functions of the body, including the circulation, digestion, nervous and immune systems.
  • Aids in the relief of stress, tension and anxiety by creating harmony and well-being.
  • By steadying the emotions and calming the mind, the practice of yoga can bring a sense of perspective and freedom to life leading us towards peace and inner strength.

Yoga Practices and Classes
  • Yoga postures (asanas) work on the physical body, stretching, toning and relaxing muscles, strengthening joints, massaging internal organs and balancing the nervous system.

  • Breathing practices (pranayama) use the conscious control of the breath to stimulate and balance the energy levels and steady the emotions.

  • Meditation focuses the awareness within, creating stillness in the deeper levels of the self.

  • Yoga Nidra is a systematic method of deep relaxation, inducing physical, mental and emotional peace.

Foundation Level Yoga
  • These classes introduce and develop the core of our yoga practices.

  • Suitable for beginners and those wanting to consolidate at this level.

Progressive Level Yoga
  • These classes expand on Foundation level yoga, developing our practices to a deeper level.

  • Recommended for students who have completed at least two Foundation level courses and those with suitable prior experience of Satyananda yoga.

Experienced Level Yoga
  • These classes expand on Progressive level practices, particularly in the areas of meditation and chanting.

  • Recommended for students who have been practising yoga regularly for more than a year.

General Level Yoga
  • These classes will cover a variety of practices, pitched to the level of the students attending each class.

  • Recommended for students with some previous experience of yoga.
