Karuna first started teaching Satyananda Yoga in London in 1996 under the guidance of Swami Vedantananda Saraswati. Classical Children’s Yoga classes were introduced to Perth school children in 2004 in private classes and in a number of schools across the metro area, covering kindergarten age through to Year 12. Classical Yoga for teenagers and adults was established in 2008 in Darlington village, Perth Hills under the business name Karuna Yogi Yoga at Darlington Yoga and is well supported by a loyal following of like-minded Yogis looking for a professional, traditional, meditative Yoga class.
Karuna has over 20 years experience in teaching a Satyananda-style Classical Yoga that combines integral yoga techniques. Each class is tailored to suit all ages and levels of experience, with Asanas (meditative poses), Pranayama (breathing practises) and authentic Yoga Nidra (guided meditation) as taught by Swami Satyananda, the creator of Yoga Nidra. Intimate class sizes (up to 15) ensure a relaxed, friendly and supportive yoga experience.
Karuna is a fully qualified, diploma certified UK trained Satyananda Yoga teacher, with a British Wheel of Yoga (the UK governing body for yoga instructors) Accredited Diploma, an adult TAFE teaching certificate (City & Guilds) and full membership of SYTA (Satyananda Yoga Teachers Association). She studied Satyananda Yoga exclusively for over a decade in the UK with the highly regarded poorna sannyasin, Swami Vedantananda Saraswati, including 1500 hours teacher training (1996-2000). Plus, additional hours of studies and training were amassed with the esteemed poorna sannyasin, Swami Pragyamurti Saraswati, in London. Karuna's journey into meditation began after studying Transcendental Meditation in Sydney in 1990.
With nearly 30 years of personal yoga and meditation practise and 2 decades of yoga teaching experience, with regular ongoing professional development in a wide range of yoga styles, she teaches a traditional, classical, strong but safe yoga, combining asana, pranayama, meditation and Yoga Nidra, for adults and children of all ages and abilities in a variety of settings.
Karuna is a long term committee member of Perth-based Swaha Western Australia, a not-for-profit WA group for Satyananda trained Yoga initiates, teachers, yogis and friends. Swaha facilitates monthly kirtan and chanting, as well as full moon havans. Workshops and residential ashram style retreats are also facilitated by Swaha throughout the year and are run entirely voluntarily by the Swaha group, who donate all profits made to registered charities.
Karuna is a Bachelor of Science (hons) and a Master of Science degree qualified professional Allied Health Clinician currently working nearly full time in healthcare for the Australian Government, as well as a former State Registered Podiatrist with the UK National Health Service. She has had a professional allied health career for over 25 years, working with all ages in community and hospital public health, almost entirely in the NHS, government or the not-for-profit sector. Police clearance and Working With Children Certificate are both up to date.
Karuna emigrated to Australia from Brighton, England with her husband and one year old baby boy in 2001. After a stint of living in Northern NSW, completely off the grid, she now lives in Darlington, Perth Hills in a "treehouse" style home on 3/4 acre with her husband and 3 teenage boys, plus two rescue dogs: Bindi the greyhound and Merlin the roohound.
