Membership Requirements

Full Membership

Full membership is open to all persons over 18 years of age who:

  • teach yoga in the Satyananda system of yoga and are resident in Australia or New Zealand
  • agree to abide by the SYTA Code of Ethics and Code of Professional Practice
  • agree to support the aims of SYTA as referenced in the SYTA Constitution
  • have attained a former Satyananda Yoga Academy (SYA) issued Diploma qualification (or equivalent) and/or have a former SYA issued level 2 Certificate (or equivalent) and can provide evidence of same or have attained a Yoga Instructor in the Satyananda Tradition qualification offered by Sharing and Learning Yoga.
  • have attained an accredited first aid qualification inclusive of HLTAID001 (Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation), HLTAID002 (Provide basic emergency life support) and HLTAID003 (Provide first aid) valid for 3 years and can provide evidence of same. For New Zealand based teachers the first aid requirement is to have a NZ first aid certification inclusive of NZQA unit standards 6401, 6402 valid for 2 years and can provide evidence of same.
  • hold a current Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance policy (unless teaching in NZ) and provide evidence of same. If you do not have current insurance, please go to SYTA's Insurance Offering.
  • hold a current Working With Children Check (WWCC) if actively involved with teaching children's yoga classes or are required to have a WWCC as per legislation in your State of residence in the event children attend your general yoga class (more information regarding WWCC requirements can be found in the Member Zone under Policies).
  • provide evidence of earning 12 points of Professional Development (PD) with a minimum of 6 points to be gained from Satyananda based Professional Development per membership year at membership renewal time. PD points to be earnt in the year leading up to renewal. Please note that SYTA's PD Policy and PD point requirements changed in June 2018. Please refer to the information available within the Member Zone for further information.
  • can be nominated and seconded for membership by other SYTA full members. All nominators and seconders are required to complete and submit the form at www.jotform.com/80207879896879 . **(see below for more details).

The Australian Diploma of Satyananda Yoga Teacher Training offered by the former Satyananda Yoga Academy (SYA) was initially adopted as the minimum entry requirement for all Satyananda Yoga teachers residing in Australia or New Zealand who wish to join SYTA as a Full Member. For those who do not hold the former SYA Diploma or Level 2 Certificate or the Yoga Instructor in the Satyananda Tradition qualification offered by Sharing and Learning Yoga, equivalence will be determined by SYTA at time of application.

**The role of the membership nominator and seconder is to affirm/confirm that the applicant is teaching according to the Satyananda system of yoga, as outlined on www.syta.org.au and that the applicant has read, accepts and agrees to abide by the SYTA Code of Ethics and the SYTA Code of Professional Practice
In order to nominate another teacher for membership to SYTA, you must be a SYTA full member who is either currently teaching or who has taught in the Satyananda style of yoga for a minimum of 5 years and are committed to upholding the high standards of teaching in the Satyananda system of yoga, as detailed in the SYTA Codes referred to above. All nominators and seconders are required to complete and submit the form at www.jotform.com/80207879896879 .

To join SYTA as a Full Member

  1. Read the SYTA Code of Ethics and Code of Professional Practice
  2. Complete and submit online your SYTA Full Membership Application along with evidence of qualifications (teaching and first aid) and insurance cover. (Only do so if you have NOT BEEN A MEMBER BEFORE or HAVE NOT BEEN A MEMBER FOR AT LEAST 12 MONTHS).


Associate Membership

Associate membership is open to all persons over 18 years of age who:

  • live in Australia, New Zealand or other countries who do not meet the Full Membership criteria but who do support the aims of SYTA
  • are Diploma graduates from the former Satyananda Yoga Academy (SYA) or hold qualifications from other verifiable Satyananda system of yoga teacher training programmes who live outside of Australia and New Zealand
  • retired teachers who may have been SYTA full members previously and are no longer teaching yoga
  • can be nominated and seconded for membership by other SYTA full members. All nominators and seconders are required to complete and submit the form at www.jotform.com/80207879896879 .

To join SYTA as an Associate Member

  • Complete and submit online your SYTA Associate Membership Application. (Only do so if you are NOT A MEMBER ALREADY).


  • Honorary Membership

    SYTA Honorary Membership is by invitation only by the SYTA Management Committee and is complimentary. It is for the most highly experienced senior teachers in the Satyananda tradition both within Australia and overseas who are recognised as dedicated and authentic ambassadors of the Satyananda system of yoga.
